I have never had a big yearning to be “out there”, to be the centre of attention. I guess I should have realized that driving around in a giant Daisymobile would seriously compromise any thoughts I might have of making it through the summer being inconspicuous. Seems I can’t get too far without being noticed, for one reason or another, while driving Miss Daisy.

People honk at me while I’m driving down the highway which I don’t mind although I can’t tell whether it’s a friendly “hello” honk or a “hey Daisymobile driver, there are flames coming out of your exhaust pipe and we could toast marshmallows back here…..”. So I did have this thought the other day, to put a sign on the back of Miss Daisy to help me with this dilemma. Honk once if you love wild daisies!! Honk repeatedly if any of the following conditions apply:

1. My side entrance door is wide open, flapping in the wind, and I’m leaving a trail of personal debris behind. (I did once leave my side door open while leaving a friend’s place a couple of weeks ago and mistakenly thought that their running alongside the RV, frantically waving their arms as I drove away, was just a real nice, athletic  farewell on their part.)

2. I forgot to unplug myself from the electrical and water hookup back at the campsite and I’m dragging the entire apparatus behind me, sending sparks flying in all directions.

3. I am pooping all over the road, creating dangerously slippery driving conditions behind me, seemingly oblivious to the fact that I forgot to put the cap back on the holding tank.

4. You detect the scent of burning muffins wafting through the air. (which would mean that the muffins I’m baking while driving are done!! Don’t worry, I’d pull off to the side of the road to extract them from the oven….)

It’s not just on the road where Miss Daisy gets noticed or I seem to attract attention. When I pulled into my campsite the other day, four women were seated having a conversation at the campsite across from mine. Their heads turned in curious unison as the expression on their faces read, “What the daisy is that?”

Once I got myself settled, plugged in and put up my dazzling new awning that I love (!), I decided to do a few exercises. So, I pulled out my yoga mat, resistance bands and stability ball and kicked things off with a few squats with my ball, up against the side of my RV. I was in the middle of my 10th rep when my neighbour poked her head out of her window and said hello. She then went on to say that I was the first person she’d seen in the two weeks she’d been camping there doing anything resembling exercise…..

As we were having this chat while doing my squats, I glanced over to see the four women looking over again with expressions that now read, “What in the daisy is she doing now?”

Within minutes, I was certainly beginning to stand out at this campground…..

Not one other person spoke with me the entire time I was there. In fact, I overheard two children walk by Miss Daisy one afternoon and utter, “That’s a weird trailer”.  Considering that every other trailer in the park was basic white I guess I can’t argue that remark.

At this point in life, I’m okay with being different. I’m okay with being the one that stands out. I’m okay whether people like it or they don’t. Frankly, I don’t give a daisy.

I think we offer the world something with our difference, our uniqueness, our own personal gift, our own creativity, our own take on life.  To quote Wayne Dyer, “When you’re just like everybody else, you’ve nothing to offer other than your own conformity”.

There will be many things in my life which will be forgotten. Many times when I have conformed and gone unnoticed. But if I am remembered for having spent a summer driving around in a Daisymobile, encouraging others to live and look at life a little differently, well, that’s fine by me.

And if there were a few more stability balls being put to use in the RV world, I’d be cool with that too……
